Capitalism as a system ought to be judged by its failures as well as its successes.

The automobile-driven economic growth of the 1950s and 1960s madeDetroit a globally recognized symbol of successful capitalist renewal after the great depression and the war (1929-1945). High-wage auto industry jobs with real security and exemplary benefits were said to prove capitalism’s ability to generate and sustain a large “middle class”, one that could include African Americans, too. Auto-industry jobs became inspirations and models for what workers across America might seek and acquire – those middle-class components of a modern “American Dream”.

This would of course happen in DC…where the appeasement of those making food and bussing tables for the political elite is most desirable. Nonetheless a good story, given that even walmart’s threats were unable to kill the bill. Bottom line: Companies with over $1 billion in annual corporate sales and using facilities over 75,000 square feet will be forced to add a few extra dollars per worker per hour to the payroll budget.

Prosecutors have until Thursday, July 11, to respond to that motion, after which Judge Denise Lind will rule.

Shortly before he became a household name around the world as a whistleblower, Edward Snowden answered a comprehensive list of questions. They originated from Jacob Appelbaum, 30, a developer of encryption and security software. Appelbaum provides training to international human rights groups and journalists on how to use the Internet anonymously.

Appelbaum first became more broadly known to the public after he spoke on behalf of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at a hacker conference in New York in 2010. Together with Assange and other co-authors, Appelbaum recently released a compilation of interviews in book form under the title “Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet.”…

WASHINGTON (PAI) – Walmart’s reversion to its normal widespread labor law-breaking – firing workers who led walkouts against it last fall and this spring – has prompted Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla., to introduce legislation to protect the workers.

Though his legislation is not expected to go anywhere in the tea party-run GOP-controlled House, Grayson used HR2311, the “Worker Anti-Retaliation Act,” to spotlight the retail monster’s continual repression of its low-paid no-benefits workers…

MSNBC political reporter Benjy Sarlin has written a sharp deconstructionof the Republican Party’s evolving attitude towards Latino voters. The shock of Mitt Romney’s 2012 loss and the resulting calls for Latino outreach from conservatives have given way to old habits: namely, consolidating the white vote and keep hoping that’s enough to propel the GOP to electoral victory. Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who memorably claimed the day after the election that he’d “evolved” on immigration reform, now rejects reform and the idea that Republicans need Latinos to win…
